Gizmo was hired to fabricate a heritage musuem in the Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas' home town, Pinpoint, Georgia. the project was amazing and i think everyone is happy with the way it turned out. the New York Times found the project slightly controversial because of the judges relationship with a major donator to the museum, Harlan Crowe. "In the most recent case, the Times reports that Harlan Crowe, a close friend of Thomas who once gave his wife $500,000 for Liberty Central (a Tea Party-affiliated group,) is now financing a multimillion-dollar restoration of an old Georgia cannery where Thomas’ mother once worked, at the Thomas’ behest. The problem here is that the ethics code that binds federal judges says judges “should not personally participate” in raising money for charitable endeavors, out of concern that donors might feel pressured to give or entitled to receive favorable treatment from the judge." no comment, watch this video.

goal: to make new furniture out of old furniture i find on the street. this is a table built entirely (minus glue, 4 screws, and 4 leveling feet) from the pull out table leaves of an oak table. i disassembled the leaf pulls and used the material as legs.

i recently fabricated a life size replica of John Muir's "hangnest", a small shack that was built off the back side of a sawmill in what is now Yosemite National Forest, for the Oakland Museum. this was a really fun build, staying true to traditional building techniques but still making the structure itemized and movable. i used mostly reclaimed lumber but still had to scenic some rough sawn douglas fir to look weathered. i'm really pleased with the way this turned out.

Gizmo recently took on the challenge of building, and installing temporary walls in the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco CA to display the work of a handful of contemporary Chinese artists. the work deconstructs traditional Chinese art, pulling from modernist and postmodern concepts of the last 30 years to experiment with a new view of Chinese painting. a few notes from the curators Lui Pang and Bui Hau:

"Entering the new century, contemporary Chinese artists are now navigating more difficult terrain: they are seeking to win the right to both inherit and comment on traditional civilization. Earlier contemporary artists had neither the authority nor the interest for this...The works in this installation exemplify this turning point in contemporary Chinese art, one that not only expresses rediscovery of traditional artistic values but also signals an artistic renaissance in tandem with the rise of the nation."

I started working at GIZMO last week. we are fabricating a kinetic sculpture for Reuben Margolin, a local east bay artist, for the Anatole Hilton in Dallas, TX. this is a huge project in scale and concept. Reuben has designed a wave sculpture roughly 90' x 60' that will be hung 140'from the ceiling of the hotel. we will be fabricating close to 10,000 bike reflectors that when grouped into three dimensional diamond-shaped modules will act as the wave form. a single offset, motorized arm will engage the diamond-shaped modules in motion. the wave form hangs from a complex system of cables and pulleys that rest on and run through custom fabricated trusses. this is an amazing piece of art and i'm really excited to be apart of this build team. check back in for updates on the project.
this is a 4' wide model of the structure.

Since the end of Woodminster season i started working for the tech directors contracting business, New World Remodeling and Construction. We've been rebuilding a deck in the oakland hills for the last five six weeks. starting with structural repairs, we moved into replacing the existing "chicken-wire" hand railing with brand new redwood hand railing around the entire deck, a custom front door, custom doggy door, and finally a beautiful stain and sealer refinish. a camera phone photo doesn't really do the place justice. The Weiland family was thrilled with the results and we celebrated with a dog show and hot cupper. thanks for all the delicious coffee breaks. mum brews one hell of a pot.

Singing has come and gone. this was a great set form designer Gary Barton. Easily the highlight of the show was rigging the rain gag and engineering a way to drain a steady, four minute flow of falling water off the stage. This sidewalk flat was the hero piece and it wouldn't have been half as beautiful with out the final touches from Eddy Dunn, the tech director, Gary B and Ed Cassel, the scenics.

The organization is doing great, they have begun renting out the museum for bday parties keeping the place afloat in this rough economy. the first track comes from Junior Kimbrough's first album, All Night Long, recorded in 1992 in a local church with Junior's son Kent "Kinney" Kimbrough (aka Kenny Malone) on drums and R. L. Burnside's son Garry Burnside on bass guitar. The Black Keys put out the album, Chulahoma, where all the songs on the record where written by Junior and performed by the Keys. The title of the album is a reference to Chulahoma, Mississippi the location of "Juniors Place" a juke joint purchased and ran by the family past Juniors death in 1998 until it burned down in 2000. I threw in a couple other favorites of mine. i hope you enjoy them as much as i do.

Calling all Comic Book Readers and Artists:

Caffeinated Comics Company is holding its first art show entitled “Comics Covered”. Artists are invited to submit pieces that are their own interpretations of comic book covers. Anyone, any age, any skill level can submit a two dimensional piece based on a comic cover of their choice that they have re-drawn. Artists are invited to contribute more than one piece.

Rules for Submission:

1. All work must be standard comic book size (6 5/8” x 10 ¼”) Maximum, including borders (we recommend no borders)

2. For display purposes, all work must be 2 dimensional but all mediums are welcome.

3. Included with your piece must be a copy or reproduction of the original piece.

4. If pieces are mailed and the artist wishes for them to be returned, they must include a self addressed stamp envelope.
5. With your explicit permission any artwork that is sent in digital form can be posted on the Caffeinated Comics Company website.

Deadline for Submissions is MONDAY JUNE 22nd, 2009. Pieces can be dropped off or mailed to Caffeinated Comics Co, 3188 Mission Street (at Valencia) San Francisco, CA 94110. Last night i had the chance to see the fleet foxes melt faces. the band's self-described "baroque harmonic pop jams" sound inspired by the classic Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, but these werewolves of flannel still bring original arrangements and beautiful vocal work to create a sound of their own. I picked up the new Canon Power Shot G10 while i was back in LA for the weekend. This a point and shoot that packs a solid Hawaiian punch. It's a 14.7 mega pixel, acts like slr (manual focus, changeable lenses, easy bracketing, manual f-stop and shutter speed controls, etc). it takes great pictures and is less mass to carry around than a D40/60. I'm really pleased with the image quality and highly recommend this camera to anyone looking.

There is already so much memorabilia packed into this museum which is piled on top of a functioning office. You just got to wonder where's it all gonna go...you're just going to have to come down and see it for your self.

After finishing the film in carmel i found myself back on the hunt for work. I received a call from my old pal Garret Bock at Playland about doing another ad for Lander. I had five days to come up with something and i'm pleased to say they liked it.
The group at Lander really connected the header, "Now more than ever, the world needs great auditors", we worked out a bunch of kinks through a series of drafts and finally came to something we are both pretty happy with.

I went to see the famous Jonestown show last night at the Independent and needless to say they rock solid. two things bummed me out: the 60's are still alive and the band didn't fall apart due to excessive drinking and drug use, unfortunately they kept their shit together through-out the entire set. i had to bail early so maybe just maybe something belligerent happened after i left but if i was a gambling man, i'ld bet they finished with out any bruises.
